Fishing and Hunting
Fishing - Fishing is definitely a year round sport on Drummond Island. Beginning with the spring perch run, these fish are caught throught the ice until it is unsafe. Once the ice goes out, perch fisherman continue to fish this run by boat. The smelt run begins approximately mid to late April and lasts about a week. Summer catches include: pike, bass, walleye, perch, cisco (lake herring), salmon, rock bass, and sunfish. In the Fall, the perch run again, usually in October. After that , when the ice forms, shanties dot the bays. Pike spearing season opens January 1.
Hunting - Although the two major hunting seasons are duck hunting (opening in October and running into November) and deer hunting (October 1 to Novemebr 14 - archery) and (November 15-30 - Gun), there are numerous types of game to hunt including rabbits, woodcock, and partridge. A special Bear hunting season, which does not coincide with the rest of the state is held on Drummond Island. For complete information on rules, times of various seasons, etc., it is best to obtain a copy of the Department of Natural Resources rules and regulations, available where hunting licenses are sold or through the DNR.
